Diabetes Mellitus is undoubtedly the most dreaded diseases affecting the world’s urban population today.
Diabetes Mellitus can be divided into two categories, Type 1 or Insulin Dependent Diabetes and Type 2 or Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is also known as Juvenile Diabetes, in which the body does not produce Insulin at all. Type 2 Diabetes is far more common, affecting middle aged adults. The disease is caused due to insufficient production of Insulin in the body, or the body is unable to properly utilize the Insulin produced in the pancreas. While in the first case, the patient is dependent on Insulin injections and medicines to control Diabetes; in the case of the latter type, the emphasis lies on proper regulation of diet and regular exercise, through which the disease may be kept in control.
Type 2 Diabetes is a “Lifestyle Disease” as its most common causes are stress, junk food, obesity and lack of exercise, all of which are banes of the contemporary society.
