Information on Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis or 'TB' usually involves the lungs. The infection can affect other parts of the body, including bones and brain. The cause is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In India TB is a major problem. It spreads easily in families and in overcrowded housing.
Lung TB symptoms include tiredness, cough, expectoration of blood, fever with night sweats, lymph gland enlargement, and weight loss. Chest pain and breathlessness are more marked when there is associated pleurisy, with fluid collecting between the two membranes covering the lung. TB meningitis involves the membranes covering the brain; the symptoms include general apathy, loss of appetite, fever, headache and vomiting.
X-rays and sputum culture confirm the diagnosis. In meningitis the CSF is examined.

This is worsened, since the treatment is prolonged, by the tendency of patients to take the medications irregularly. They may even assume they are cured when the symptoms disappear and stop the medications. However, there are other good drugs. To ensure cure, doctors extend the treatment using a different combination of drugs. The advised dosage and duration of treatments should be followed to prevent a recurrence and the complications caused by drug-resistant organisms. Find out from the doctor about the side effects of drugs used, particularly in long-term treatment. For example, streptomycin can cause kidney damage and ototoxicity leading to deafness. Regular check-ups during treatment and follow-up later for 2 to 3 years are essential.

People in contact with TB cases must get checked up and treated if required. 2. Hygiene is the key to prevention. TB usually spreads through 'droplet' infection. A patient must cough or sneeze only into a kerchief Expectoration or other contaminated material should be disposed off in ways that avoid exposing others to the infection - e.g. by incineration. The patient's clothes, towels, dishes etc. should be kept separate, washed thoroughly, and preferably sterilized by boiling. 3. Discontinued or irregular treatment and poor follow-up are the main reasons for cases of failure in TB treatment. 4. People with AIDS are highly susceptible to TB and other infections.
